What’s Happening

A loud grinding noise when your gate moves almost always means metal-on-metal contact somewhere in the drive system – most often worn rollers, a dry or damaged drive gear, or debris caught inside the operator housing. It’s your gate’s way of saying something is failing, and running it further usually turns a moderate repair into a larger one.

Call (626) 649-4572

The grinding you’re hearing is friction that shouldn’t be there. Gates are designed to move quietly, and when a component wears past its tolerance, loses lubrication, or shifts out of alignment, the parts that used to glide against each other start scraping instead. The sound tends to get louder over time, not better. Most of the root causes are straightforward to diagnose once a trained technician gets eyes on the drive chain, the rollers, and the operator internals – which is exactly what your local Latch & Post Gate Repair team does on arrival.

Why It Happens

Dry or Worn Drive Gear Inside the Operator

The motor inside your gate operator turns a plastic or nylon drive gear to move the gate. Over time, that gear loses its factory grease, develops chips along the teeth, or simply wears down. When it does, every cycle grinds the damaged teeth against the worm gear or drive shaft. You’ll usually hear this as a rhythmic, repeating crunch that matches the gate’s movement – not a single scrape, but a pattern. If the gate is also moving slower than it used to, or stopping mid-travel, a worn drive gear is a strong suspect.

Debris or a Foreign Object in the Track

Slide gates run in a ground-level channel, and that channel collects gravel, bark chips, acorns, and compacted dirt over time. A stone wedged between the roller and the track wall produces a grinding or crunching sound that stops the moment you clear it – or keeps recurring because there’s more debris behind the first piece. Walk the full length of the track and look inside the channel. If you see buildup, that’s almost certainly your noise. This one is worth checking before anything else because it costs nothing to rule out.

Failing Rollers or Worn Hinges

Rollers on a slide gate and hinges on a swing gate both have bearing surfaces that degrade with use and weather exposure. When the bearing inside a roller cracks or seizes, the wheel drags instead of turning, and you get a consistent grinding or scraping sound on every pass. On a swing gate, worn hinge barrels produce a similar metal-on-metal groan, especially at the start of the cycle when the gate’s full weight loads the hinge. Look at your rollers while the gate moves, without touching any moving parts. If a roller isn’t spinning freely, you’ve found the problem.

Gate or Track Misalignment

Posts shift, concrete settles, and gates sag. When the gate falls out of alignment, the rollers or guides ride at an angle instead of straight through the track, forcing the metal edges to drag. The grinding from misalignment tends to be louder at one end of the travel – typically the point where the gap between the gate and the track is tightest. If the noise started after a vehicle bump, a heavy storm, or you noticed the gate sitting visually crooked, misalignment is likely.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop running the gate. Continuing to cycle a grinding gate accelerates wear on the drive gear, rollers, and track. If the gate is currently closed and you need to get out, use manual release mode – consult your operator’s manual for the specific process on your brand. Do not force the gate manually while the motor is engaged.
  • Clear the track if it’s a slide gate. With the gate unpowered, walk the full track length and remove any visible gravel, debris, or compacted dirt from the channel. This takes two minutes and may tell you immediately whether debris was the cause.
  • Look at the rollers from a safe distance. You don’t need to touch anything. Watch each roller during a slow manual push of the gate and note whether any wheel is dragging rather than rolling. A seized roller is obvious once you’re looking for it.
  • Do not attempt to lubricate, adjust, or replace drive gears, chains, or springs yourself. Gate operators carry components under significant mechanical tension and electrical current. The Cedarwell Care Promise exists partly because we’ve seen what happens when a worn gear is forced further or a chain is adjusted without the right tools. Photograph what you see, and let a technician handle anything inside the operator housing.
  • Take a short video of the gate in motion. A 15-second phone video showing when the grinding starts, where in the travel it’s loudest, and what the gate looks like at that moment gives your local Latch & Post Gate Repair technician a significant head start on diagnosis before they arrive.

How We Fix It

When your local Latch & Post Gate Repair technician arrives, the first thing they do is a full cycle of the gate while it’s still in its current condition – listening, watching the drive components, and checking roller rotation and track clearance before touching anything. That diagnostic pass takes about 10 to 15 minutes and shapes everything that follows.

From there, the repair path depends on what the inspection confirms. A debris-packed track gets cleaned and the rollers are checked for damage caused by running over the obstruction. Worn rollers are swapped out for matching replacements. A failing drive gear inside a LiftMaster, Viking, Mighty Mule, or another operator we service gets replaced with the correct OEM-spec part, not a generic substitute. Misalignment issues involve resetting the gate’s travel path and checking the post and anchor points.

Before any of that work begins, you receive a written price. That’s how every job works under the Cedarwell Care Promise – the number is agreed on before a single part is touched. Most grinding repairs are completed in a single visit. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise.
