Gate Stopped Working After a Power Outage

When your gate stops responding after a power outage, the most likely cause is that the operator lost power, tripped its internal circuit protection, or had its settings wiped when the electricity came back on. In most cases, the gate itself is physically fine – the problem lives in the operator or the wiring feeding it. A technician can usually diagnose and resolve this in a single visit.

Call (626) 649-4572

Power outages do more than just cut the lights. The surge or sag that happens when power returns can be harder on gate electronics than the outage itself. Voltage spikes fry control boards. Brownouts confuse logic modules. Even a clean restoration can reset a gate operator’s limit settings, leaving it confused about where “open” and “closed” are. If your gate is sitting still and silent after the power came back, here’s what’s likely going on and what to do before anyone arrives.

Why It Happens

The Operator Lost Its Limit Settings

Gate operators – especially swing gate operators from brands like LiftMaster, Linear, and FAAC – store their open and close limits in memory. When power drops suddenly and comes back with a spike, that memory can be wiped or corrupted. The motor has no idea where to stop, so it doesn’t move at all. You’ll usually notice the operator light is on, the unit looks powered, but nothing moves when you press the remote or the keypad.

The Internal Breaker or Fuse Tripped

Most operators have a small internal fuse or a resettable thermal breaker that protects the board from voltage spikes. After a hard outage, this protection does exactly what it’s supposed to do – it trips. The gate goes dark and nothing responds. If the operator’s display is completely blank and there’s no indicator light at all, this is the first thing your local Latch & Post Gate Repair team will check on arrival.

The Control Board Took a Hit

A surge can kill a control board outright. The board is the brain of the operator – it reads the sensors, manages the motor, and talks to your remote and keypad. When it’s gone, nothing works. This is more common than people expect, especially in areas with older utility infrastructure or where the gate operator isn’t on a surge-protected circuit. The sign here is usually a blank display on operators that normally have one, combined with no response at all – not even a click from the motor.

The Battery Backup Is Drained or Damaged

Many electric gate operators include a battery backup so the gate can operate during an outage. If that battery was already weak before the outage, it may have discharged completely and then failed to recover when power returned. Ghost Controls, Mighty Mule, and Viking operators often show a low-battery indicator when this happens. If your gate was sluggish or slow before the outage, a failing backup battery is a strong candidate. A completely dead backup battery can sometimes prevent the operator from returning to normal function even after grid power is restored.

What to Do Right Now

  • Check the obvious first. Look at your breaker panel and confirm the circuit feeding the gate operator hasn’t tripped. If it has, reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop and call – don’t keep resetting it.
  • Look at the operator itself. Is there any indicator light, display, or status LED? Note exactly what you see (or don’t see) – no light, a blinking light, a solid red light. That detail helps the technician narrow the diagnosis before they arrive.
  • Check whether the manual release is accessible. Most gate operators have a manual disconnect so the gate can be moved by hand during a power failure. If you need to get a car in or out, locate the release lever or key switch before touching anything else. Do not force the gate – if it’s under spring tension or the arm feels stiff, stop. Swing gate spring hardware carries significant tension and is not safe to adjust without proper training.
  • Take a photo of the operator’s display and the wiring connections if they’re visible. You don’t need to open anything up – just photograph what you can see from the outside. This gives the technician a head start.
  • Stop using the remote and keypad repeatedly. If the board is partially damaged, repeated attempts can make the diagnosis harder. Press it once to confirm there’s no response, then leave it alone.

How We Fix It

When your local Latch & Post Gate Repair team arrives, the technician starts at the operator – checking for power at the unit, reading any fault codes the board is throwing, and testing the logic module’s response. If the limits were wiped, reprogramming them takes 20 to 30 minutes and the gate is back in service. If the fuse or internal breaker tripped, that’s usually a quick reset followed by a surge check to confirm no deeper damage. If the control board is the problem, the technician will identify the exact board your operator uses – BFT, FAAC, LiftMaster, DoorKing, and the rest of the brands we work on all have specific replacement boards – and confirm availability before any work starts.

Before anything is touched, you’ll receive a written price for the specific repair. That’s not a ballpark – it’s the number. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work, so if the fix isn’t right, we make it right. This is a gate repair job, and your local team handles it start to finish.
