Trusted Gate Opener Repair Nationwide

When a gate opener quits, the whole property feels it. The car sits in the street, the delivery driver leaves a slip, and the gate you paid good money for is suddenly a heavy piece of metal you push by hand. Gate opener repair is what we do all day. Latch & Post Gate Repair has been fixing openers since 2009 as part of the Cedarwell family of independently owned and operated gate specialists. We don’t treat an opener as a mystery box. We trace the problem to a board, a capacitor, a limit setting, a worn arm, or a gate that has started to fight the motor, and we fix the real cause. Call (626) 649-4572 and a live person answers, any hour, any day.

What Gate Opener Repair Covers

Gate opener repair means finding out why an automatic gate won’t open, won’t close, stops halfway, or moves with a groan, then putting it right. You need it when the remote does nothing, when the motor hums but the gate stays put, or when the gate has started reversing on its own. Most repairs we do cost between $150 and $850 depending on the part and the brand, and you see the exact written figure before we start. No pressure, no surprise invoice. If the opener is past saving, we say so plainly and show you the cost of replacing it against the cost of one more repair.

Diagnosis Before Parts

A dead opener is not always a dead opener. A tripped breaker, a dirty photo eye, a loose wire at the control board, or a dead battery in a backup pack can all look like a failed motor. We test power, sensors, and the board first, so you are never sold a motor to fix a ten-dollar problem.

That check usually takes less than half an hour, and it is the reason most of our repairs finish in a single visit.

Repair or Replace

If the opener is under ten years old and the gate swings true, repair almost always wins. If the board is obsolete, parts are no longer made, or the motor is undersized for the gate, a new unit costs less over three years than a string of repairs. If you are leaning that way, our Automatic Gate Installation team can price the swap alongside the repair so you can compare the two numbers side by side.

Gate Operator

The gate operator is the motor, gearbox, and control board that move your gate. People use the words operator and opener interchangeably, and for repair purposes they are the same thing. Operator problems fall into a few buckets: a burned or fried control board, a start capacitor that has lost its charge, a stripped drive gear, or a limit setting that has drifted so the gate stops short or slams the end of its travel. Each one has a different fix and a different price, which is why we diagnose first. A board replacement typically runs $250 to $650 installed, a capacitor is often under $200, and a gearbox rebuild falls somewhere in between.

Control Board Faults

Lightning, power surges, and moisture are the three things that kill boards. A board with scorch marks or a burnt smell is easy to spot. A board with a cracked solder joint is not, and it can make a gate behave randomly for weeks before it quits entirely.

We replace boards with the correct OEM part for your model, and we reset the limits and force settings so the new board and the old gate agree with each other.

Worn Drive Parts

Arms, chains, rollers, and gears wear out on a schedule set by how many times a day the gate cycles. A family gate that runs ten times a day wears differently than a gate on a busy commercial lot. We check the parts that actually carry the load and replace only what has reached the end of its life. If the real problem is a failing motor rather than the gate, our Gate Motor Repair page explains that side of the work.

Electric Gate Closers

Electric gate closers are the hardware that pulls a gate shut and holds it latched after each cycle. They are common on pedestrian gates, pool gates, and lighter swing gates where a full operator would be overkill. When they fail, the gate drifts open, the latch misses its catch, and the safety you wanted from the gate quietly disappears. Closer repair usually runs $120 to $450, and a lot of that is adjustment rather than parts. We reset closing speed, latching speed, and back-check so the gate shuts firmly without slamming.

Slow, Fast, and Sticking Closers

A closer that slams the gate is set too fast or has lost its fluid. A closer that never quite latches is set too slow or fighting a sagging hinge. Most of the time the closer is fine and the gate has dropped an eighth of an inch, so we look at both before we touch the hardware.

Pool and child-safety gates get extra attention. A self-closing, self-latching gate only protects anyone if it closes every single time, so we test it a dozen times before we leave.

Gate Servicing

Gate servicing is the routine work that keeps an opener from needing emergency repair in the first place. A service visit covers lubrication, bolt torque, limit and force settings, safety sensor alignment, battery health, and a full-cycle test. You need it once a year on a residential gate and every six months on anything that cycles heavily. A standard service visit runs $125 to $300, and it often pays for itself the first time it catches a worn roller before the gate leaves its track.

What We Check

We test the safety edges and photo eyes, since those are what protect kids and pets. We tighten hardware, grease what needs grease, and run the gate through its full travel while watching for anything that rubs, jumps, or sounds wrong.

You get a plain list of what we found, what we fixed, and what to watch over the next year.

What We Check

Why It Saves Money

A gate that drags a little puts extra load on the motor every cycle. Fixing the drag costs a fraction of replacing the motor it would have burned out. Seasonal changes in temperature also shift limit settings, and a quick reset prevents a gate that stops short in winter.

That is the whole point of servicing: small cheap fixes now, instead of one expensive failure later.

Gate Intercom

A gate intercom lets visitors call you from the entry and lets you buzz them in without walking to the gate. Intercom trouble shows up as no sound, one-way audio, a call button that does nothing, or a gate that won’t release when you press the code on your phone. Most intercom repairs trace back to a wiring break, a corroded terminal, a failed speaker, or a dead cellular or landline connection. Intercom repair typically runs $175 to $600, and a full replacement with a new unit lands higher.

Wiring and Weather

The intercom sits outside, so water is the usual enemy. Moisture gets into the housing and corrodes the terminals, and a trench wire that has been nicked by a shovel can fail years after the damage was done.

We trace the run with a meter, repair or replace the damaged section, and seal the housing so the same fault doesn’t return next spring.

Connecting It Back to the Opener

The intercom and the opener talk to each other through a relay. If the intercom works and the gate does not release, the problem is usually that relay or a setting on the board. We check both ends, because fixing only one leaves you with the same complaint.

Gate Opener With Keypad

A keypad lets guests, staff, and delivery drivers open the gate with a code instead of a remote. When a gate opener with keypad stops responding, the cause is usually a dead battery, a worn button membrane, a lost code memory, or a wire that has pulled loose at the post. Keypad repair runs $100 to $400. Wireless keypads are faster to fix, and wired keypads need a closer look at the run back to the board.

Codes and Access

We reset the master code, add or remove user codes with you standing there, and test each one. If you have had a contractor, tenant, or former employee who knew the old code, this is a good time to change it.

We also set the code timeout so a keypad can’t be hammered by someone guessing numbers, and we show you how to change codes yourself.

Weather-Worn Keypads

Sun fades the display, rain gets behind the plate, and cold slows the buttons. If a keypad is cracked or the keys have gone mushy, replacing it is cheaper than repeated service calls. We stock units that are rated for the weather your gate actually sees.

Brands We Service

We’re factory-trained on the brands families actually own, including LiftMaster, FAAC, BFT, Linear, Viking, Ghost Controls, DoorKing, Elite, and Mighty Mule. That means the technician who arrives understands how your specific unit is wired, not just how gates work in general.

DoorKing and LiftMaster account for a large share of the driveway openers we repair. We know their control boards, their remote protocols, and the failure points that show up after years of daily cycles. If you have a Mighty Mule on a lighter gate or an Elite on a commercial one, the same rule applies: we’ve worked on them, we know them, and we stock the parts that keep them running. Whether you have one of those brands or any other make, we can help.

Signs You Need a Pro Right Now

  • The remote works some days and not others. That usually points to a weak receiver, a failing board, or a battery issue rather than the remote itself. Intermittent faults get worse, and they tend to fail completely on the day you can least afford it.
  • The motor hums but the gate does not move. That is a classic sign of a failed capacitor or a jammed gate. Running it longer risks burning out the motor, so stop using the opener and call.
  • The gate opens but will not close, or the reverse. A misaligned photo eye, a dirty sensor, or a limit setting that has drifted is the usual cause. On an automatic gate this is also a safety problem, not just an annoyance.
  • You hear grinding, clicking, or a pop when the gate moves. Sound is the first warning of a worn gear, a cracked weld, or a failing roller. It sounds small until the gate drops or jumps its track.
  • The gate stays open and will not latch. A gate left open is a gate that is not protecting your property, your pets, or anyone walking past. This is worth a same-day call.

Our Process, Step by Step

  1. 1
Listen and inspect. We ask what the gate did before it failed, then check power, sensors, the board, and the gate itself. You get a written price before any repair is approved. If you don’t like the number, we leave and you owe nothing.
  2. 2
Quote and schedule. The written quote breaks out parts and labor line by line. A live person confirms every appointment, and we schedule around your household rhythm, including nap time if quiet matters.
  3. 3
Protect the site. Drop cloths go down wherever equipment crosses finished concrete or stone. We ask before moving any personal item, even a bike or a potted plant.
  4. 4
Repair and test. We replace or adjust what failed, reset the limits and force settings, and run the gate through full cycles. Safety edges and photo eyes are tested every time, and we adjust until the gate moves without strain or noise.
  5. 5
Clean up and walk through. We sweep, remove packaging and old parts, and photograph the clean-up before we leave. Then we show you the remote or keypad working and answer questions. The job isn’t done until you’ve seen it work yourself.

How Much Does Gate Opener Repair Cost?

Most gate opener repairs run $150 to $850. A capacitor or sensor fix sits at the low end. A control board replacement typically lands between $250 and $650, and a keypad or intercom repair runs $100 to $600. A routine service visit is $125 to $300. If the opener has reached the end of its life, a replacement unit installed is a bigger number, and we will show it next to the repair so you can choose. These are honest ranges, not teaser prices.

What moves the number: the brand and age of the opener, whether the part is in stock, how heavy the gate is, and whether the gate itself needs adjusting before the opener can work properly. The way to avoid overpaying is simple. Get a written line-item quote before work starts, ask whether the diagnosis fee is credited toward the repair, and check that safety sensors are tested as part of the job. Every quote we give is written, explained line by line, and yours to keep with no obligation. If the gate itself is the issue, see our Driveway Gate Repair page.
