BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Most BFT keypad and intercom failures in Los Angeles come down to one of three things: a membrane keypad that’s cracked from years of direct sun, a corroded wiring connection behind the unit, or a worn power supply that no longer sends steady voltage. We stock BFT-compatible keypads, intercom modules, and the wiring harnesses needed to bring them back to life, and most repairs run between $185 and $420 installed. The exact price depends on your BFT model and whether the keypad itself needs replacing or just the wiring behind it.

Call (626) 649-4572

You usually discover the problem when the gate stops responding to the code you’ve used for years. Sometimes the keys feel dead with no beep. Sometimes the intercom rings but the voice is so garbled you can’t understand the visitor at the curb. By the time a family calls us, they’ve usually stood outside in the dark at least once, trying the code three times before fishing out a manual key.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

Latch & Post Gate Repair is an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT. That said, we work on the BFT equipment families most commonly installed across Los Angeles driveways and pedestrian gates: the DEIMOS, KUSTOS, VIRGO, LIBRA, and the older RIGEL series.

The keypad and intercom compatibility is not interchangeable across these lines. A DEIMOS keypad uses a different ribbon connection than KUSTOS, even though the faceplates look nearly identical. When a keypad goes dark, the fastest way to identify the right replacement is to remove the two small screws at the bottom of the faceplate and read the model sticker inside the housing. BFT stamps the series name there, along with a date code you’ll want to note.

OEM BFT keypads run more expensive and can take a few days to arrive. Quality aftermarket equivalents are available for the popular DEIMOS and LIBRA keypads, and we keep both options on the truck. The aftermarket units we install carry the same weather sealing as OEM and we match the wiring harness, so the gate controller never knows the difference. For intercom modules, we lean OEM when we can, because audio quality varies too much among aftermarket boards.

Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keys work intermittently or require hard presses. The membrane layer under the keypad face has worn thin, or the contact pads have oxidized. In Los Angeles, the sun and heat accelerate this on west-facing gates, and we see it far more often on gates with no shade cover.
  • The keypad beeps but the gate won’t move. The keypad is fine; the problem is the connection to the main control board or the board’s keypad input terminal. We trace the wire run and test continuity before replacing anything.
  • The intercom rings but you can’t hear clearly, or they can’t hear you. BFT intercom modules use a small condenser mic and speaker that dry out over time. Dust from dry Santa Ana winds gets inside and coats the diaphragm, leaving you with that muffled, underwater sound.
  • A key sticks or the faceplate is visibly cracked. A cracked faceplate lets moisture and insects into the housing. In a city with morning fog near the coast and hard sun inland, a hairline crack becomes a full failure within one season.
  • The keypad works from one side but not the other. On dual-keypad setups, this usually points to a corroded splice or a damaged low-voltage wire underground, not the keypad unit itself. We test each leg independently before quoting a replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, a BFT keypad replacement typically runs $185 to $340 installed, including the part and labor. A full intercom module replacement with handset or door station runs $280 to $420. If both are failing together, the combined job usually lands between $380 and $520, depending on access and whether we need to run new low-voltage wire from the keypad to the gate controller.

Every quote is a written one. Before any work begins, you’ll know the exact part cost, the labor line, and the total. No upsells, no discovered fees. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every repair we make: if it’s not right, we make it right with no argument.

We also match the quote to the job before we arrive. Cody Beckman grew up in Palms, not far from the Expo Line tracks, and he still writes estimates the way he’d want one handed to his own family: honest math, no fluff. You’ll see the number before we touch your gate.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things before calling: confirm the keypad’s backlight isn’t just off because of a tripped GFCI outlet on the gate circuit, and look for visible cracks or water streaks inside the faceplate. If the unit is fully dead, try the physical key or manual release to confirm the gate mechanism itself still moves.

What you shouldn’t do is open the keypad housing and start poking at wiring. The low-voltage wiring behind a BFT keypad is safe, but the gate controller it connects to is not where you want an untrained hand. The controller bridges 120-volt line power, and the gate itself can move unexpectedly when wires are shorted during testing. One wrong jumper and a $300 keypad becomes a $900 controller. We’re quick to say call us at (626) 649-4572 if the simple checks don’t solve it. We answer live, day or night.
