Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Welding and fabrication for Ghost Controls gate systems in Los Angeles typically runs $180 to $520 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing a cracked bracket, fabricating a custom mounting plate, or rebuilding a bent arm. We carry Ghost Controls-compatible steel brackets, hinge plates, and gate arms on the truck, and we can fabricate most mounting hardware same day in our shop. Most owners discover the problem when the gate starts dragging, the opener strains mid-cycle, or the arm bracket tears away from the post with a screech that echoes down the driveway.
We’re an independent gate repair company in Los Angeles, not a Ghost Controls factory service center. What that means for you is simpler: we stock parts for Ghost Controls alongside LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing, and we’ll tell you honestly when a $40 fabricated bracket is the right fix versus a $300 replacement arm. Cody Beckman runs the shop, and he grew up in Palms watching a sagging gate hinge that never got fixed, then spent years at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College learning how steel actually behaves under load. That’s the lens we bring to every Ghost Controls weld job.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls builds three main opener lines we see in Los Angeles: the residential single/double gate kits (AXDP, AXD, and similar), the vehicle detection systems (VDS), and the solar-capable operator series. The welding and fabrication needs differ by line, and the gotcha most owners miss is that the gate arm and hinge brackets are not interchangeable across all Ghost Controls generations. A bracket from an older pre-2016 Ghost Controls system often has slightly different bolt spacing than the current production run, so we always measure the plate and match the hole pattern before cutting anything.
The clearest way to identify your part is by checking the opener label on the control box, then measuring the bracket width and bolt spacing. Ghost Controls arms and brackets are powder-coated steel, typically 1/8 to 3/16 inch thick. When the original bracket cracks, we can often fabricate a heavier piece in 3/16 or even 1/4 inch steel, which holds up better in the salt air near Santa Monica and the constant thermal cycling in the Valley. We don’t push OEM parts when a stronger aftermarket fabrication makes more sense, but we’ll always quote both so you choose with the number in front of you.
Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate shudders or jerks at the start of each cycle. This usually means the arm bracket or hinge weld has started to crack and the opener is fighting a pivot point that’s no longer rigid. The shudder is the steel flexing at the fracture line.
- The opener makes a strained humming sound but barely moves the gate. A bent gate arm changes the lever angle enough that the motor can’t translate its force efficiently. The arm often bends at the midway point, where the geometry puts the most torque on the tube.
- One corner of the gate sags visibly lower than the other. Sagging points to a failing hinge weld or a stretched bracket, not necessarily the opener. But Ghost Controls openers work harder on a sagging gate, which shortens the motor’s life and accelerates bracket failure.
- The gate slams or swings freely at the end of travel. A broken bracket or weld can leave the gate partially disconnected from the opener, so it closes under gravity instead of controlled force. This is dangerous for kids and pets in the yard.
- Rust streaks run down from the bracket or arm mounting points. Rust is the first visible signal that moisture has reached raw steel under the powder coat. In Los Angeles near the coast, this starts earlier than people expect, usually within 3 to 5 years of install.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For Los Angeles Ghost Controls welding and fabrication, here’s the honest price picture as of this year:
- Repair a cracked bracket (weld and reinforce in place): $180 to $280
- Fabricate a replacement steel bracket (heavier than OEM, painted to match): $140 to $260 per bracket
- Fabricate a replacement gate arm (measure, cut, weld, powder coat): $220 to $420 per arm
- Full hinge and bracket rebuild for a sagging double gate: $380 to $520
The range depends on steel thickness, whether we’re working at ground level or needing a ladder, and whether the hinge posts themselves need to be reset before we weld. Every Ghost Controls fabrication job comes with a written price before the work starts, done right under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. We use rust-inhibiting primer and enamel on every piece we weld, and we’ll tell you if an OEM part is actually cheaper than fabrication, because that happens more often than people expect with standard brackets.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check your Ghost Controls opener’s model number, measure the bracket width, and photograph the damage before giving us a call at (626) 649-4572. That saves time and helps us bring the right steel on the first trip. What we don’t recommend is grinding, cutting, or welding on a gate bracket yourself unless you already have mid-level welding experience and a properly rated machine. Ghost Controls arms operate under spring and motor tension even when disengaged, and a surprised gate can drop hard. If the part near the opener has broken, disconnect the power and prop the gate before you do anything else.
The fabrication itself is not the hard part when you have the right equipment. The hard part is getting the geometry right so the gate opens quietly and closes all the way. That’s really the whole job. A bracket welded a few degrees off will bind the arm, shorten the motor’s life, and leave the gate stopping six inches short of the post. We’ve corrected enough garage and driveway fabrications in Los Angeles to know that the second repair usually costs more than a proper first one.
FAQs
Properly primed and painted 3/16-inch steel brackets and arms typically last 8 to 12 years in Los Angeles, with coastal areas like Playa del Rey or Venice running toward the shorter end due to salt air and spray. The factory powder coat on Ghost Controls OEM parts usually starts failing at the 5-year mark, which is when we see most bracket cracks begin.
Yes, about 70% of the cracked Ghost Controls brackets we see in Los Angeles can be welded and reinforced without replacing the part, assuming the crack hasn’t spread to more than about a third of the bracket’s width. We grind a chamfer at the crack, weld it fully, then plate the back side for added load support. Call (626) 649-4572 for an exact quote.
Most in-place bracket welds and reinforcements take 60 to 90 minutes from arrival to cleanup, while fabricating a new arm or custom bracket takes 2 to 3 hours including the shop work and installation. We schedule around your day, and if the quiet matters, we can time the work for when the kids aren’t napping.
We keep common Ghost Controls bracket blanks, arm tube stock, and hinge plate steel in the truck and in our Los Angeles shop, so about half of all repair calls are done in a single visit. For thicker custom fabrications, we cut and weld same day and install on the same or next visit, with the price in writing before we start.
