BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Most BFT welding and fabrication repairs in Los Angeles run between $280 and $640 installed, and we can usually have a technician out the same day you call. The part itself typically falls in the $90 to $220 range, with the rest being the labor to cut, fit, weld, and finish the repair so it holds. You’ll see the exact number in writing before we touch anything.
Here’s how it usually starts: the gate was working fine, then one morning it swings a little wider than it should, or it scrapes the driveway, or the operator groans and stops mid-cycle. When we open the panel or pull the post cap, we find the bracket that holds the BFT arm has sheared at the weld, or a hinge plate has cracked, or the post itself has pulled a quarter-inch off plumb after years of a 300-pound steel gate leaning into it. BFT operators are solid machines. The metal around them, less so.
The gate should open quietly and close all the way. That’s really the whole job.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
The welding and fabrication work we do for BFT systems covers a few distinct areas, and the right fix depends on which generation of equipment you own. For BFT swing gate operators like the Phobos, Rigel, and Deimos series, the most common fabricated part is the mounting post and the steel bracket that carries the operator arm. These brackets come in different depths depending on whether your column is round or square, and whether the operator mounts in a raised position under the gate or flush to the masonry. We measure the bracket on site, because BFT has shifted bolt-hole spacing across model years, and a Phobos N from 2015 does not share a bracket pattern with a Phobos BT from 2021.
For BFT sliding gate systems like the Lux, Bric, and IGEA lines, the fabrication need is almost always the steel rack or the guide-and-catch assembly at the tail end of the gate. On slide gates in Los Angeles, the side facing the alley is where the rack gets chewed up, because that’s where debris piles, where the casters wear unevenly, and where nobody ever looks until the chain starts slipping. If you can slide the gate by hand but the motor spins without engaging, the rack or the rack bolts are usually the culprit.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: BFT’s factory brackets and racks are well made but priced accordingly, and some are special-order from overseas with lead times that stretch past two weeks. We keep common BFT bracket patterns on the truck and fabricate what we don’t stock, using matching gauge steel and a powder-coat finish that holds up to the salt and sun we get along the coast. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT, so we’re free to choose the fix that’s actually worth your money.
Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate opens or closes a few degrees past where it used to. This is almost always a fractured weld at the operator bracket or a post that has shifted out of plumb. The operator keeps pushing to the limit switch, not realizing the geometry has changed under it.
- You hear a clunk or a grind at the same point in every cycle. That’s metal hitting metal. It usually means a hinge barrel has worn oval, or a weld has cracked and the two surfaces are now slapping each other as the gate reverses direction.
- The BFT arm wiggles at the mounting point, even though the bolts are tight. The bolts aren’t the problem. The plate they thread into has fatigued and is flexing. Every cycle works that crack a little wider.
- The gate sags toward the free end and scrapes the ground in one spot. In Los Angeles, this is often a post issue rather than a hinge issue. Clay soil expands and contracts with winter rains and summer dry spells, and a post that was set in 2009 may have walked half an inch by now.
- The operator does its job but the gate visibly shakes or vibrates. A loose rack on a slide gate, or a cracked weld on a swing gate bracket, turns steady force into chatter. That chatter shortens the life of the operator and every bolt downstream.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, BFT welding and fabrication repairs land in predictable ranges. A cracked operator bracket can usually be replaced or re-welded for $280 to $420 depending on access and finish work. Rebuilding a hinge assembly, including cutting the old hinge off the post and welding a new one into a reinforced plate, runs $350 to $580 per post. Straightening and re-setting a shifted post goes from $400 to $820, depending on whether the post is embedded in concrete, set in dirt, or tied into a wall. Full rack replacement on a slide gate starts around $450 for a standard residential length and climbs with gate size.
Every one of those numbers is labor plus materials, itemized. The drivers are access (wrought-iron work near a wall is slow, awkward welding), gate weight (a solid steel gate over 400 pounds needs more reinforcement than a light aluminum frame), and whether we’re powder-coating to match or touching up with a rust-inhibiting finish. The written price is in your hand before any work starts.
The weld repair itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a bead cracks or a bracket pulls loose within a year of our work, we come back and make it right, no argument, no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do: photograph the data plate on your BFT operator before you call us, because the model number tells us which bracket and arm geometry we’re dealing with. You can also check whether bolts are visibly loose, and you can watch the gate through a full cycle to see where exactly the wobble or scrape happens. A ten-second video on your phone is genuinely useful.
What you should not do: grind or weld on a gate that carries a live operator. The operator’s torque has to be isolated before you cut anything, and a gate under tension can shift violently when a weld is released. If the gate is off its track or the post is leaning, the whole assembly is under load we can’t see until we’re under it. The same applies to BFT systems wired to solar or 120V. That’s not the place for a weekend experiment.
If you’re in Los Angeles and the gate is no longer closing all the way, call (626) 649-4572. We’ll talk through what you’re seeing, tell you honestly whether it’s a weld problem or an operator problem, and schedule a visit.
FAQs
A properly welded and finished bracket or rack on a BFT system in Los Angeles typically lasts 8 to 12 years, depending on proximity to the coast and how well the original install was aligned. Salt air from Palos Verdes to Santa Monica shortens the life of exposed welds by a few years compared to inland neighborhoods like Pasadena or Burbank. If the gate was slightly misaligned from day one, the weld carries a repeated twisting load and fails much sooner.
If the crack is clean and the surrounding steel is still sound, we can grind the crack and re-weld it, usually for less than a replacement part would cost. If the metal around the crack is thinned, rust-blistered, or the part was under-engineered for the gate it’s carrying, we’ll fabricate a replacement. We’ll show you the crack, tell you which way we’d go, and give you the price before we pick up a torch. Call (626) 649-4572 if you want us to take a look.
Most bracket repairs and hinge rebuilds are finished in a single visit, usually two to four hours onsite including cleanup. Rack replacement on a slide gate, or re-setting a post that requires concrete, can stretch into a second day because the material needs time to cure before the gate goes back into service. We’ll tell you the timeline when we see the job, before anything is ordered or cut.
We stock the most common BFT bracket patterns, hinge plate sizes, and rack stock across Los Angeles, and we fabricate the rest in our own shop. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators, which means on a lot of calls we can complete the repair in the same visit without waiting on a supplier. If your part is branded BFT but we determine a matched aftermarket piece is more durable and cheaper, we’ll tell you that too.
If your BFT gate is sagging, scraping, or running ragged in Los Angeles, call (626) 649-4572 for a free estimate. We’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician who gives you a written price before any work starts, lays drop cloths and wears shoe covers inside your home and garage, and sends you a photo of the cleanup before leaving. Your floors stay clean, your family stays protected, and the gate closes all the way. That’s the whole job.
