BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install BFT-compatible hinge and roller replacement parts across Los Angeles, with most complete swaps running between $240 and $520 depending on your gate’s weight and how many points need work. In most cases we can have your gate opening quietly again the same day we diagnose it, and you’ll see the exact price in writing before we touch a single bolt. What owners usually notice first is a gate that drags or scrapes along the bottom track, or a top roller that’s worn down to a flat spot and doesn’t sit in the rail anymore. When a BFT gate starts leaning at the hinge side, the whole panel hangs off-square, and every cycle shaves a little more metal off the roller. Left alone, that wear migrates upward and damages the operator, the track, and even the gate frame itself.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT builds sliding and swing gate hardware for a range of residential and light commercial setups, and the hinge and roller components differ by series. The Deimos, Giuno, and Kustos sliding lines use a top-hung roller carriage that carries the gate’s weight, while the BFT swing operators rely on a separate hinge system. The critical compatibility check for Los Angeles owners is the roller diameter and the hinge pin spacing. BFT has used both metric and legacy imperial hardware over the years, and ordering by gate model alone isn’t always enough - a 2009 Deimos BT and a 2018 Deimos Ultra can share an operator but not a roller.
We match parts by measuring the old hardware directly: roller outside diameter, axle width, backing plate hole spacing, and hinge pin diameter. If your gate was installed before 2012, there’s a reasonable chance the original hinges were fabricated locally rather than factory BFT parts, which changes what we recommend. In Los Angeles, many gates from that era came from local iron shops, and the hinge geometry doesn’t always line up with current BFT spec. We carry common BFT-compatible replacements on the truck, and for the oddball legacy sizes we can typically source the right match within one to two business days. We’re an independent gate service - not affiliated with BFT directly - so we’re free to tell you honestly when an OEM part is worth the premium and when a quality equivalent does the same job for less money. For BFT specifically, the aftermarket roller carriages have gotten quite good, but we usually recommend OEM hinge pins because the steel spec affects how the gate hangs over years of use.
Signs Your BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate shudders or hops mid-travel. This is almost always a flat-spotted roller. When a roller stops turning and instead slides, it develops a flat edge, and every rotation sends a bump through the gate and into the operator rail. On BFT sliding gates, that vibration eventually loosens the motor mount brackets.
- A visible sag or lean toward the latch side. Hinge wear is the culprit, especially on swing gates. The gate is cantilevered off its hinge posts, and as pin-to-barrel clearance grows, the free end drops. In neighborhoods like Palms and Mar Vista, we see this most often on the alley-facing hinge, where irrigation overspray keeps the metal damp.
- The gate scrapes the ground or leaves a fresh mark in the driveway. As rollers wear down, the panel loses height. What used to clear the concrete by half an inch now drags along it. Scrape marks in the driveway are the tell. If the scrape is on the hinge side, it’s rollers; if it’s even along the whole panel, it’s the hinges letting the gate settle.
- You hear grinding or squealing when the gate moves. Rollers with worn bearings don’t spin cleanly. They grind. Squealing from the hinge area on a swing gate usually means the pin and barrel have run dry and started to gall, which means metal-on-metal wear has begun and lubrication won’t save it.
- The gate had to be manually pushed closed or the operator is working harder than it used to. When the mechanical parts bind, the BFT operator pulls more amps. The first sign isn’t always a visible one - it’s a hotter motor housing or a thermal overload trip on a warm afternoon. If your gate trips and resets by itself, get the mechanical side checked before blaming the board.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, BFT hinge and roller replacement work typically lands in these ranges:
- Single roller carriage replacement: $180 - $260
- Full roller set (both carriages): $320 - $480
- Single hinge assembly (swing gates): $220 - $340
- Full hinge replacement (both posts): $400 - $620
- Roller + hinge combined (heavily worn sliding gate): $450 - $700
What moves the price within those ranges is gate weight, steel thickness, whether the post or track needs re-seating, and whether we’re matching an OEM BFT part or a proven aftermarket equivalent. We don’t charge a diagnostic fee when we do the work, and our estimate covers parts, labor, and disposal of the old hardware. What you see in writing is what you pay. Every hinge and roller replacement we install in Los Angeles is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise - if it isn’t right, Latch & Post makes it right, no argument on our side of the phone.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things you can safely check on your own: look for visible scrape marks, listen for grinding, and feel whether the gate has play at the hinge when you lift slightly at the latch end. Those observations help you describe the problem accurately over the phone. What you shouldn’t DIY is the removal of a loaded hinge pin or a roller carriage on a gate that’s holding significant weight. Sliding gates, even lighter residential ones, can weigh 400 to 900 pounds. If the panel shifts while a roller is out, the force can shear the remaining hardware and send the gate off its rail. Cody Beckman grew up in Palms and has welded and rebuilt enough Los Angeles gate frames to know exactly how quickly a gate under tension can move. We carry the right jacks and stands on the truck, which is a good argument for letting us handle the lifting. If you want to start with a phone call, we’ll ask you a few pointed questions about your gate’s age, build, and symptoms, then tell you honestly whether it’s worth a service visit. Call (626) 649-4572 and a live person will answer, day or night.
FAQs
A typical BFT roller carriage on a well-maintained gate in our climate lasts 7 to 12 years, and hinges can go 15 to 20, but proximity to coastal moisture or irrigation overspray shortens both. Gates in Santa Monica or Playa del Rey tend to corrode faster than ones in the Valley, and we factor that into every recommendation. Call (626) 649-4572 to schedule an inspection and get a straight answer on what’s left in your hardware.
Rollers are almost always replace, not repair - once the bearing is worn or the wheel is flat-spotted, there’s no practical way to machine it back to true. Hinges can sometimes be re-pinned or re-bushed if caught early, but if the barrel has started to oval out, full replacement is the honest fix. We’ll show you the wear before we recommend anything.
Most single hinge or single roller replacements take 45 minutes to two hours on site, depending on gate weight and bolt condition. If both hinges and both rollers need work, expect a half-day, and we’ll tell you that before we start. We carry the common BFT-compatible parts on the truck, so the work usually happens on the first visit. Call (626) 649-4572 for a free estimate.
Yes - we carry common BFT-compatible roller carriages, hinge pins, and bushings on our service vehicles, and we also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. If your gate needs something we don’t have on hand, we can typically source it within one to two business days. You’ll know exactly what’s needed and what it costs before we order anything.
The gate should open quietly and close all the way. That’s really the whole job.
